What the Ark Graduates Are Saying
OUR STORIES

David Bilodeau
“I came to the Ark after 22 failed rehab stays. Instead of going home like I would normally do, I asked someone at the rehab center to find me a sober living home. By God’s design they chose The Ark. From day one, I felt a sense of safety. Meeting all the men at The Ark was a complete culture shock for me. I came from a big city, and Greensburg, IN is a small town. However, it quickly became apparent that I was in a place that would genuinely hold me accountable as well as guide me to becoming a man I could be proud of. Graduating from IOP was a big step into my recovery, however graduating from MRT (Moral Reconation Therapy) was one of the best things that I have ever done. Seeing the growth in not only myself, but the people around me was a feeling that I had honestly never felt before. A sense of purpose is what I believed it to be along with pride for being able to form relationships and not try to ‘go it alone’. I became a Caretaker at The Ark (similar to a trustee in the justice system) about 6 months into being here. After navigating that challenge, I was offered a position as the House Manager (a position similar to a Caseworker in the justice system) If it wasn’t for Donald Brumley, the Executive Director at The Ark, I would never have had any thoughts about pursuing the position. Donald helped me believe that I could do the work and had valuable experience that could help others. The Ark as a program, has genuinely saved my life, as well as allowed me to be a light into others!”

” On February 17th of 2025, I was released from prison on parole with nowhere to go and a plan to violate to just go back and finish my time. My parole officer told me I had to go somewhere, so my dad who had graduated from a program called The Ark of Decatur County in Greensburg Indiana, told me I should go there. So, I gave it a chance, and it ended up being one of the most important decisions I could have ever made. It gave me a place where I didn’t have to always be alert and worried about my environment. The Ark allowed me to form friendships and to be around a great group of people daily. I will forever be grateful for the staff at The Ark! As well as Greensburg! “

” Joining MRT helped me improve my relationship with God and my Fiancé. It helped me understand that I was putting myself into the wrong situations, as well as gave me different routes to take when I was faced with them. MRT has allowed me to be in the position to help other men grow spiritually as well as within themselves. I’ve found a purpose that not only allows me to be a better person to myself and my family, but to men that start as strangers and instantly become friends and family. “

“Coming to The Ark helped change my life for the better in many ways. It helped me not only get sober, but it also helped me to recover from the madness I was stuck in. Being in a faith-based program also strengthened my walk in faith and with the Lord. Donald and Phil played a major part in me staying at The Ark, you can see they have a passion for helping men choose a better life. MRT helped me realize what was most important to me in life and what I was spending my time doing. It help me get out of the addicted and selfish mindset as well as understanding that I needed to spend more time with God. Coming to The Ark was one of the best decisions I made. The program and MRT have had a positive impact and helped repair my marriage as well as guided me to become a better father.

“I was hesitant when I got to The Ark, I wasn’t sure if it was going to be what I needed to change my life. I just knew that I wanted to be sober and make my relationship with God stronger. I prayed that He would put me where I needed to be as well as where He wanted me to be. I was blessed to be able to graduate in Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP), Relapse prevention, as well as Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT). MRT has played a major part in my recovery, allowing me to understand that God is the cornerstone of my recovery and providing me with an opportunity to be a light in the men at The Ark. God has also blessed me with a chance to be a caretaker here at The Ark. Allowing me to not only help guide the men here in their recovery journey, but to be able to learn from them as well. “
“I came into The Ark of Decatur County sober living house at a point in my life where I knew something had to change. I was tired of the same cycle, tired of trying to do everything on my own and coming up empty. But in this house, I found more than just a place to stay—I found a new way to live.
Most importantly, I found God.
Putting God first has changed everything for me. Where I used to feel lost, I now have direction. Where I used to rely on my own strength, I’ve learned to lean on His. Every day isn’t perfect, but I know I’m not walking alone anymore, and that gives me peace and purpose I never had before.
I’m also surrounded by a group of brothers who understand the struggle. We lift each other up, hold each other accountable, and remind each other why we’re here. There’s real strength in that—strength that comes from unity, honesty, and shared faith. When one of us feels weak, the others step in and help carry the load.
This journey isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. God is number one in my life today, and because of that, I’m becoming a better man—one day at a time.”

Over the last year and a half, The Ark has given me time to gather my thoughts back after years of drinking. I have been able to use the resources to find coping mechanisms as well as to understand that there is a life outside of the madness that I was putting myself through. One of the biggest steps that I have made was to further my spiritual belief. I have always believed in God, however there were times that I used to stray away from Him. I have found a stronger belief that He exists! Volunteering at the church has also given me a purpose in giving back to the community and to the God that I serve.
